Please help me with our Itenerary!! leaving on monday!

We are leaving on monday for dc and we are only staying there until wednesday. We are a family of three and with the short period of time that we have, I want to at least make the most out of it. I booked the Omni SHoreham for those 2 days. My daughter is seven and I am trying to make this trip as fun and educational for her and as well as a learning experience for all of us.

Thank you so much!!!

Frommer's puts almost all the content of its guidebooks on its free website which makes it a terrific resource. Here's the URL for the DC "home page"; notice that at the bottom of the Complete Guide box there, they have suggested itineraries for 1, 2, & 3 days.

Go City Kids is a great resource -- the searchable Events Calendar is especially useful. Here's the URL for the DC "home page":

Most of the DC tourist sites are under the auspices of the National Park Service & offer a Junior Ranger program for younger children which gives them an activity booklet and then an "award." Here's the web page which gives the list of all of those in the USA. Unfortunately, the list is presented only alphabetically, not by location, so you'll need to print it off & then check it against the list of whatever your own must-do's are -- OR when you see a "Parkie" at any site, ask him/her about it

Also, odd as it may sound, the very well done National Postal Museum, next to Union Station, was designed with an eye to the fact that DC receives many young visitors -- and is quite "engaging". Plus, it's not as huge (or popular) as some of the other museums, so it makes a nice, very manageable respite from the bigger & better-known ones.

Here's the Smithsonian's Kids page which features descriptions of the current exhibitions at all its museums most likely to be of interest to kids:

And here's the July schedule of the very reasonably priced shows for families the Smithsonian sponsors; there's a puppet show playing during the time of your visit which sounds like fun -- and sitting in air-conditioned comfort for a while could be quite nice :-)

We went to DC last summer with my then 11 and 13 year old. It was a quick trip like yours. The first day we got in we had tickets for the trolly night tour of the memorials. Great choice! There was no way we could have walked to see all the memorials in the time it took for the tour. It was cooler in the evening and awesome to see the lights come on at night. I don't know if a 7 year old can stick with it till after 10 at night, tho. The next day we went to the Ford's Theatre (kids loved it), the old post office (it was okay - kids not real impressed). We had advance ticket for the Washington monument so we didn't have to wait in line then had the opportunity to do a walk down tour. One of the highlights of our trip! We slit up and did 2 Smithsonians. The boys did the Natural History (dinosaur bones) and the girls did the American History (saw Dorothy's ruby slippers and other great things). We ate at the McDonalds in the Space Museum and it started to rain - so spent a couple of hours there. Kids loved it. Had tickets for the Spy Museum. Lots of hands on things - but wasn't as good as we thought it would be. Stopped off at the National Archives on the way home (about 7 at night) - great time to go - not too long of lines. On the way out of town the next day - went to Arlington. Was hot and sticky - but GREAT!
