Is DC open for tourists during shutdown

Can you help?

We are two sad Brits who having looked forward to our trip to Washington for months now fear that the government shutdown will deny us the pleasure of visiting many of the renowned attractions. We cannot delay our trip and will be there from this Sunday. Sooooo - can you help by suggesting things that we can see and do during our few days. And,more specifically, whilst I realise that museums and other buildings will be closed will we still be able to see and photograph the iconic structures along the Mall. We were also about to book a "Monuments by Moonlight" tour but are now unsure that the monuments etc will be lit at night.(emails to the tour companies remain strangely unanswered)

Any suggestions to lift us out of our depression? All info would be welcome.

Regards,Brian

They have barricaded and blocked off the Mall and the monuments as well. There are still Park Police who will ticket people. Guess they are working for free.

For other things to do, read the threads here. There have been many suggestions already to others who asked similar questions and are in same boat as you.

No need to book that tour in advance this time of year. If for no other reason than you don't want to go if the weather is bad that evening. There is another topic on this forum laying out things that are open. And we can hope that by next weekend the crazies in Congress will have figured it out. But who knows?

Hi Mackem do you live in Sunderland? Were only a few miles from you in Washington UK and fly out to NY tomorrow and get to DC on the 15th. In a back to front way I am looking forward to seeing the other open sites as we may well have not had time to see them, doing both cathedrals and the Phillips Gallery, and Dumbarton Oaks plus walks to George Town, Embassy Row and the tidal basin got my trainers ready. Fingers crossed for you and have a great trip. Dont worry about what you can't change.

All the best Jean

You might want to pop into the Heurich Mansion at the corner of 20th and Sunderland Place NW, near Dupont Circle. http://www.heurichhouse.org/

Thanks Arlington, sounds very interesting, have booked a tour just incase it's busy. Only 6 hours until we leave home...very excited. TA is a wonderful way to make a holiday feel real, I feel as if I've made friends without a word being spoken..thanks all
