Arlington- places to eat?

We are staying at the Key Bridge Marriott for a few days in mid-April. Reviews for the hotel are fine, but reviews of their food less so. We are also travelling on a budget which has not been helped by the weakness of our currency!

Suggestions would be welcome of places we can get breakfast near the Key Bridge Marriott and we don't mind counter-run premises. Also ideas for establishments for an evening meal would be helpful.

We are a fit mid-fifties couple and would be happy taking a stroll to Georgetown in the evening, for example. Our days will be spent in DC as this is our first visi to the city so we will be doing the tourist thing.

Head west one stop on the Metro Orange Line (toward Vienna) to the Court House stop and you can try my favorite steak house, Ray's the Steaks. They also have a more casual place on Wilson Boulevard about 1/2 way between Rosslyn and Court House called Rays to the Third that would be worthwhile as well. Also, Fire Works is good for pizza and has a great beer list at Court House as well. Otherwise, there are lots of places around the Clarendon Metro stop (one stop further from Court House) of which Liberty Tavern is my favorite (but there are several places near the Metro there).

Will you have a car? The list of recommendations is very different if you can get even a mile away from the Metro.

If you are foot / Metro limited and don't mind a hike up hill, a good option for dinner is Red Hot & Blue (a local chain barbeque restaurant with sit down service). For breakfast, I'd suggest just finding a Starbucks or a Cosi or a Dunkin Donuts or any number of coffee shops that are endemic and buying a pastry or breakfast sandwich, rather than a sit-down meal.

Thanks for these really helpful suggestions. We will not have a car but are fine with a hike uphill. We will probably have SmarTrip cards so travelling about on the Metro will be our main means of transportation.

We do like to sit down for breakfast so were wondering if there is a Denny's or similar within walking distance of our hotel.

There isn't a good sit-down breakfast place near the hotel. There's a Silver Diner near the Clarendon Metro stop and an IHOP near the Ballston Metro stop.

Very highly recommend the Silver Diner at Clarendon for breakfast. It's like a Denny's only with higher quality food! Have a look at their menu online to get an idea of what they offer. Despite out hotel offering a free breakfast, we ended up eating at the Silver Diner every morning for 5 days.

Thank you so ,much for your advice.

Still with regard to Arlington. We will be dropping our hire car off at the Avis depot on 10th Street North and are thinking of walking back to the Marriott Key Bridge via JFK's burial

site. Is this a safe route to walk on an afternoon? We are accustomed to enjoying walks of 3-4 miles.

That walk is safe, but uninteresting. The first half is very residential. Also, the Ft. Myer Army post is between you and Kennedy's tomb. I do not know if they will permit you to walk across the base, and if so from which gate to which gate. It could require a significant detour.

All things considered, I would likely board the Metro Orange line at Clarendon (about 4 blocks northeast of Avis -- if you are there at the lunch hour do try Liberty Tavern, a block west of the Clarendon Metro), ride to Rosslyn, change to the Blue line, and ride one stop to the Arlington Cemetery station. After seeing Kennedy's tomb you certainly can walk back to your hotel.

Thanks Warthog, that is so helpful. We won't try and walk across a military base it'll be the Metro for us!
