from airport to city

What is the best affordable way to go from the airport (IAD) to the city ? We have rented a car, but would pick it up after a few days in Washington as there is no need for a car in the city ... we think.

The cheapest way is to take the 5A Metrobus. For more detailed info, see the second frequently ask question that appears on the right-hand side of this page:

You are quite right---you will have no need for a car when staying in DC. Depending on exactly where you will be staying, you can either walk to the major attractions or use Metrorail and Metrobus---and perhaps even the Circulator bus.

Metrobus 5A is both the best, and the most affordable, if it's ok to wind up at L'Enfant Plaza. It's a pleasant enough ride, and traffic on those roads is such that the bus is no slower than anything else.

If you want to take bus 5A from Dulles, here's a tip: If you need to ask for directions (it's a big place), ask very specifically about Metrobus 5A. They know where it is, but they have (or had, last time I traveled) a business relationship with another ground transportation operator that precludes admitting the existence of Metrobus unless you ask specifically.
