vegetarian or vegetarian-friendly restaurants

My husband and I will be staying in the Dupont Circle (Washington Hilton) area and visiting the typical tourist sites and would appreciate and vegetarian or vegetarian-friendly, more than just salads and pasts, places to eat. I am a vegetarian but my husband sometimes eats meat so the place does to be specifically vegetarian. I prefer non-chain restaurants and like all types of cuisines. Also, if anyone can recommend a nice place for breakfast with good pastries that would also be great.

One place that I can highly recommend would be Sweetgreen:

http://sweetgreen.com/

Although they have salads on their menu with set ingredients, you do have the option of making your own. Thus if you want your salad to be vegan or vegetarian or if your husband wants to add meat or shrimp to his, it can be done there.

In addition, Chinese, Thai and Ethiopian restaurants all tend to have some vegan/vegetarian items on their menus.

BTW, if you're looking for desserts, consider the following places:

Sticky Fingers (everything is vegan):

For cupcakes:

Red Velvet Cupcakery. They, in addition to a non-vegan selection, have 2 cupcakes "Black Velvet" and "White Velvet" that are vegan and gluten-free:

Hello Cupcake. They have a daily small selection of vegan cupcakes

Sprinkles. Every day, they have a vegan red velvet cupcake on offer. (TBH, I wasn't very impressed with this vegan cupcake though others may differ):

Zatinya is a Greek/Mediterranean tapas restaurant with quite a few vegetarian friendly choices and is a popular choice on this forum. There are also Spanish tapas restaurants - Jaleo being the better known, but we find La Tasca to have more vegetarian choices. You may also want to try Teaism for breakfast or lunch, which has Dupont Circle and other locations.

I am not vegetarian and have not tried it, but I have heard good things about Maoz and it is just south of Dupont Circle. http://www.maozusa.com/

FYI, the Red Velvet near Dupont Circle is closed.

Huh! Interesting. I never heard of it, so i emailed a friend of mine who is a vegetarian (and actually works right at Dupont Circle...well, 19th and Sunderland) and she said that she and some of her co-workers have lunch there occasionally and that it's good, but not great. She said it's a franchise company, and the food is pretty good.

Just as an FYI...

Take care,

Just though of it, there's a great place in Arlington (i think it's a local chain because I think I saw one in Foggy Bottom the other day??) called Sweetgreen.

Sweetgreen is a new, chain (I think?) restaurant that's great for a ilght lunch. All they serve....are salads and yogurt! It's very good, though, and if you're in the mood, you should check it out.

Thank you. Sweetgreens sounds pretty good looks like we will go there for lunch at least once. Teaism sounds exactly what I like for breakfast, can't wait to try it along with the other desert places.
