Accommodatio in Washington D.C for family of 6

My family is travelling from Australia to America and will be staying in Washington D.c for 2/3 nights (mid to end of December 2006)but we have no idea as to the best areas to stay in that are close to attractions and public transport. Also any advice on which hotels

to stay in that are clean and good value for money would really be appreciated ( at least 3 stars probably 4)

Any other advice or comments are most welcome

Thanks

Coincidentally enough, someone else asked about this last week. I'm not sure how to insert a link here in my reply, but you can find the "thread" by typing these words into the special Forum search box which appears above your post: hotel family six

You could consider staying at Embassy Suites. There are 3 locations in DC -- one on 22nd St., NW (this one is about 5 blocks from either the Dupont Circle Metro station and the Foggy Bottom station); one by the convention center (about 4 blocks from the Metro Center station); one right by the Friendship Heights station. In terms of being closest to the sights, the convention center one is the best. However, one poster who looked into staying at that one said it is more expensive than the other 2. Also, there is an Embassy Suites in Arlington, VA in the Crystal City area (2 and a half blocks from the Crystal City Metro station). In addition, Embassy Suites gives their guests a full free breakfast everyday.

Another possibility--Doubletree Guest Suites Washington, DC on New Hampshire Ave., NW (a short walk to the Foggy Bottom Metro station--plus a short walk to the Vietnam Memorial and the Korean War Memorial).

A new Residence Inn by Marriott opened up that is on E St., SW. This one is close to the Federal Center SW Metro station and close to the Air & Space Museum and the American Indian Museum.

BTW, these are all 3-diamond properties.

Have you considered the Holiday Inn Capitol - one block from a Metro station (serving four lines!), two blocks from the Air and Space Museum, free wireless access in their newly renovated lobby, rooftop pool (note that the weather during our Decembers are a little different from yours!), mini-suites with microwave oven and mini-fridge, and a Starbucks Coffee in front of the hotel. Plus if they offer their "Kids Stay Free" and "Kids Eat Free" promotion during the week you'll be here, you could save lots of money. The reviews here on TripAdvisor have been fairly positive.
