There is a metro bus and another bus. Check the IAD website ground transportation section. I think it might be www.metwashairports.com

There is no rail link between Dulles Airport and downtown DC. Check out www.wmata.com for more information about where metro goes.

From Dulles airport, take the 5A Metrobus to Rosslyn station. Then at Rosslyn, get on Metrorail to take either the Blue Line train or the Orange Line train and McPherson Square station is three stops away.

The 5A Metrobus, while the cheapest way to get into DC, only runs every 40 minutes and is not very reliable. If you don't want to take a taxi, consider taking the Washington Flyer Bus www.washfly.com from Dulles to the West Falls Church Metro station. The Washington Flyer Bus leaves Dulles at 15 and 45 past the hour and is an express ride to the Metro station. Once at West Falls Church, take a train heading towards to New Carrollton and get of at McPherson Square.

You ask about the "Dulles Airport area" rather than from the airport. If you are considering staying near Dulles Airport while a tourist in DC, let me try to dissuade you. You will spend a lot of time on the road and on Metro. And unless you go to the airport, the transportation options are even more limited. Not to mention that the Washington Flyer's shuttle to the Metro station is $10 one way or $18 round-trip, per person. Then you have to pay the Metro fare into DC too.

Thanks for all the suggestions!!

The reason why they're staying in the Dulles area, is because most of the hotels are booked in the DC area during the Inauguration week.
