7 Day trip to DC in April '06...itinerary ideas...

We are going to DC in April (1st time) for 7 days and need help with an itinerary. We would like to also incorporate Gettysburg, Williamsburg/Jamestown/Yorktown...my husband is a HUGE history buff. Any help would be much appreciated...all of the information I am finding is overwhelming.

Thank you so much!!

You will need at least 2 days for the Williamsburg/Jamestown/Yorktown part of your trip, IMO. Gettysburg is about a 2 hour or so drive from DC. In DC, you could go to some of the Smithsonian museums (check out: www.si.edu to help narrow it down to the ones that interest you the most). You could walk along the Mall and see the monuments and memorials. There is so much to see and do, it all depends on how much of your vacation you want to allot for DC and how much for your other stops.

I would recommend that you incorporate walking around some neighborhoods (Dupont Circle, Capitol Hill, Shaw-U Street, etc.) into your trip. DC is more than just museums, monuments, and memorials. The neighborhoods where people actually live have a lot of character.

If you incorporate Gettysburg as well as Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown into your vacation to DC, you will spend a lot of your time on the road. W/J/Y is well south of DC, and Gettysburg is north -- opposite directions and, depending on the time of day and which day of the week you are heading to either destination, you may be stuck in traffic. Go to www.washington.org, the official tourism office of DC for tips.

We live in Maryland and just did 5 days in Gettysburg. You probably need at least 2 weeks to encorporate everything you want in your trip, and that's pushing it. We are 1 1/2 hours from Gettysburg, 4 hours from Williamsburg, and 45 minutes from D.C. You can spend a week in D.C. and not see everything. All three places I mentioned require a lot of walking, so bring your tennies. You don't want to try to drive into D.C. or park there, it's brutal. There is a metro train, which makes a visit there much easier. The metro is great because you can get an all day pass and ride to all the attractions you want to visit. If you chose to see Arlington National Cemetary, you would need one day just for that. The metro also has a stop for Arlington. The Smithsonian is another day in itself, not to mention the hundred other things to see. The Lincoln Memorial is close to the Vietnam Wall, the Reflecting Pool and the Washington Monument. Gettysburg and Williamsburg can be done in 3 days, but there is a lot of travel time in between. Hotels in D.C. are very expensive, it's best to stay out of D.C. and travel into the city to visit.
