Best place to stay for some holiday spirit

Thinking about taking Amtrak to DC for a few days at the beginning of December for a getaway. What hotels would you suggest for some holiday spirit. Planning on doing a lot of walking since we will not have our car. Would love to hear any Christmas activity suggestions as well. It's been 20 years since I have been to DC. Last year at the same time we went to NYC and really enjoyed that. Hoping this trip is similar.

Depending on your budget, the Willard interior and exterior should be fantastic. It’s about 2 blocks from the White House and is close to the Mall.

The National Christmas Tree will be lit by then. It's always beautiful:

Agree with the Willard but it's not cheap.

Zoolights, Botanical Garden, Union Station, US Capitol Tree are all good holiday bets.

Plus there's a Holiday market by the Portrait Gallery .

DC ain't NYC at the holidays but it has a few really nice diversions.

I'd also recommend doing a walking tour of Georgetown GLOW! They're light installations set up around Georgetown, and some are interactive (like last year there was a platform with squares that lit up when you walked on them). I do it every year now and it really makes me feel festive. Here's the link: http://www.georgetownglowdc.com/

Willard or the Hay Adams.

I'd say 1-2 hours. They're usually spread out throughout the neighborhood so if you want to see all of them, budget closer to 2.

Not to stay because the location is inconvenient but perhaps a night time dinner and sightseeing- the Gaylord hotel at National Harbor. Their ICE! exhibit is supposed to be a really neat sight!

I think all the hotels that have something special themself are expensive ones. The Willard's is the best Christmas tree I've seen, but the Omni has one, also. The Ritz Carlton Georgetown has a very nice one, also, but it's not as convenient a location. I'm not sure about their other hotel, they do have a fireplace there, you could ask.

the Jefferson also has nice decorations

That isn't the ideal location either, but not too bad, just farther from metro than I'd like.

City Center DC has a very large Christmas tree, also.

Finally, the Fairmont hotel decorates and has a tree. It's better priced than the top ones. It even has an artificial ice rink inside it's courtyard for ice skating. It's not real ice, so not sure when you can start but you could check if interested. That's not too bad a location in West End. They claim they are in Georgetown, but that are not, don't believe that. US Marine COrps visiting and tree lighting in early Dec.

this was their announcement from last year on ice rink

I've been looking a bit online and the Williard was the one that caught my attention. Just wondered what other people thought as well. The Gaylord also looks interesting but I agree it's a bit too far to stay at. Thank you!
