Whale Watching

Which is the best whale watching trip in the pacific northwest?

I did a big tour a few years ago out of Seattle, and they told us the bigger the ship the further they have to stay away from any whales that are spotted.

So i thought a tour with a smaller group.boat might be better this time (June 2014)?

Any help gratefully received.

Two things: (1) Pacific Northwest covers the states of Oregon and Washington, and by some definitions, British Columbia, Canada. Please narrow down your location. (2) Please define "best". Thanks. Chuck.

All boats are required to maintain a certain distance (200 yards) and are not allowed to purposefully place themselves in the path of the whales. This is the case regardless of the type of boat you are in (whether it is a big boat or a kayak). There are times when the whales change direction and they get closer to you, but not always.

If you did the big boat last time and didn't especially like it, you might try one of the zodiac tours. Check out the TripAdvisor sections for the San Juan Islands or Victoria BC for some idea about the operators that are out there. I've only been out a couple of times, but the one that I was on was the Prince of Whales (har har) out of Victoria.
