Central Location with Day Trips

Is it practical to make day trips to Mt. Rainier, Mt. St. Helens, Columbia River Gorge from somewhere like Longview or some other suggested location?

How long is your trip?

When is your trip; the first two are high mountains and might be snow covered.

In answer to your question, yes. But...

If you want a nicer town, Olympia, the state capital.

Frankly, I'd split my time between Seattle/Olympia and Portland, from the latter it's not a long drive to Mt. St. Helens and you can see also the Columbia R. Gorge.

I would also consider two locations. No offense to our neighbors in Longview, but it is a pretty unatractive mill town. Longview is a bit of a haul for Rainier. If you do not want to stay in a city, consider a place like Packwood for the volcanos if you are talking Summer after the snow melts. Maybe Hood River for the Gorge.
