Bluegrass music & Appalachia

I'm planning a trip to VA. this summer, partly to explore the Appalachiam region, partly to hear some good blues and bluegrass music. We enjoy good inns and b&b's, crafts, scenic drives. Would appreciate some suggestions on musical venues and best places to stay in the area.

Check out thecrookedroad.org for a map, attractions, calendar of musical events. If you are coming in July, check out www.redwingroots.com which is roots music festival at Mount Solon state park, n its second year presented by the Steel Wheels music group from Harrisonburg, they are great!

Check the websites for the Barter and Paramount Theatres (in Abingdon, VA and Bristol, TN respectively) to see what plays/events will take place during your stay. There's usually a concert If you'll be here the first half of August, check out the Highlands Festival in Abingdon. There's also a summer concert series in Brisol called Border Bash (it leads up to the Rhythm and Roots Reunion in September). Check http://believeinbristol.org/ for events in Bristol VA/TN.

And I second the suggestion to check out the Crooked Road's website.

The Martha Washington Inn, in Abingdon, is beautiful, but also pricey. There are a few B&Bs in town though.

If you miss the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, VA - you will miss where it all began. It is an international destination and the best bluegrass you can find. Most people who visit there stay in Kingsport, TN - half an hour away. http://www.carterfamilyfold.org/

Abingdon, Virginia is a great town for shopping and the Barter Theatre.

Lebanon, Virginia is worth a visit. Much to see. Vincent's Vineyard is great for wine tasting. New Holiday Inn Express opening in August, 2014.

Crooked Road make for a great tour.

Carter Family Fold is the best for country/blue grass live music.
