When will this trip be? Do you prefer mountains or the ocean?

Driving straight through should take less than 8 hours, including stops for food, gas, etc. If you want to spread the drive over two or three days, you could go west from DC to Front Royal, VA, and drive down Skyline Drive, maybe getting off to visit Monticello and other sites in and around Charlottesville, VA. Or you could go east and then down the Eastern Shore before turning west. Stop at some of the pretty little towns, visit Chincoteague and Assateague islands to see the ponies, etc.
