Canoeing During Fall Foliage - Umiak Outfitters

Retired couple planning trip this fall through Maine, NH and VT. Someone posted canoeing on a lake (river) using Umiak Outfitters. Their site says 2 hrs. on the Waterbury Resevoir Lake (is it really a lake?) . Also, mentioned 2 hrs. on Lamoille River. We love off-the-beaten-path stuff, but sometimes pictures can be deceiving. I think this sounds outstanding. Has anyone done this and which should we take to be most secluded? Thank you so much.

I've done the Lamoile River trip years ago and enjoyed it a bunch. Very nice views of the surrounding hills, and this would be a great trip during foliage season. The area around the river is mostly rolling farm land w/ occasional woods. Nice relatively long views.

Have also done a fair bit of boating long ago on the Waterbury resevoir. It is indeed an irregularly-shaped lake, with lots of small hills and inlets around its edges. Very pretty overall, and no development other than a state park campground.

Waterbury Resevoir is a beautiful place to kayak. The area close to the state park is a popular spot for water skiiers so there is a fair amount of motor boat traffic. But if you go norh, in the direction of Cotton Brook, you'll find some very quiet and peaceful water. It's quite beautiful. You have a good chance of seeing loons, beavers and more.

Hello! We just returned from a long weekend in Stowe, and used Umiak to assist with a river trip (we had our own kayaks and gear, but needed help with pick up). The Lamoile River is nice...a slow moving current carries you down river. We had been planning to do the Winooski, but it's proximity to the highway, and the trip times steered us towards the Lamoile. We definitely had a nice paddle. The fellow at Umiak in downtown Stowe was very personable and helpful. The rates for assistance with transport were reasonable.

However, while we did have an overall good experience, the transport part was rather hairy - the young guy at the put in place had not fully secured our kayaks, and one nearly fell off the rack. Also...word to the wise: the put in place is very buggy and mucky. But this is NOTHING compared to where you pull out! Picture, if you will, a steep slope of wet, gray, river muck! We were blessed with making it up the hill without falling or losing a kayak. This said, we could not wait to hose our feet off! I think, though, that if we had rented from them, they would have helped to portage the kayaks. Agility is definitely needed here.
