Vermont in Summer

My wife and I along with our 1 year old want to get away for a nice 4-5 day summer vacation. Would like to stay at a nice resort, that will have lots of outdoor activities (hiking, biking, tennis, etc) good places to eat, etc. We've looked at some of the resort at Stowe (Trapp, TopNotch, Stowe Mountain Lodge) but also interested in the Essex near Burlington. Do people have a preference of being closer to Burlington, or to be in Stowe for the summer as far as things to do, activities, etc? Any comments appreciated. Thanks

The Essex is a nice place, great food...but it's not near anything, unless you consider an unpleasant suburban/strip mall-infested 25 minute ride to Burlington as "near".

Stay in Stowe, it offers much more within easy distance.

Ditto. The Essex is nice, but there's no hiking and little exceptional biking in less than a 20 min drive. Stowe is far better choice, with all you've mentioned right at hand. The rec path in Stowe (and the one in Burlington at the waterfront) are superb for walking/biking/blading. Let us know what type of hikes you're looking for and perhaps we can suggest some.

The absolute best easy/intermediate hike in the state IMO is along the top of Mt. Mansfield from the end of the toll road to the chin - about 4 miles round trip with only a few 100 vertical feet. Spectacular views to the east and west, and easy enough to pack a child.
