Itinery ideas for 20 march to 5 april texas area

We are visiting from the uk on 20 march until 5 april. We fly into houston hobby and out of houston int. We are going to hire a car and thought we would spend the first night near the airport at pearland as we will need supplies from walmart and bass pro. Also we dont land til 6pm and will be tired.

We have 4 adults and one teenager (16) and would like to incorporate the following: fishing, try a horseback ride, staying in a ranch style place if possible, a rodeo or similar, some retail therapy preferably outlet mall and just general authentic texan experiences. Would like a fishing spot every few days if possible both inland and/or coastal is fine.

Thanks for any help.

Unfortunately, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo will be over just before you arrive. However, all is not lost on the cowboy front.

Go to www.duderanches.com and click on the Texas link. You will see a list of many dude ranches where you can stay, participate in horseback rides and do all kids of cowboy type stuff. Many of them are located near Bandera, Texas in the Texas Hill Country. We've stayed at the Mayan Dude Ranch several times and have always had fun.

A stay at a property in this area would work well with a stay in San Antonio as well as on the ranch. This would give you a look at the influence of the Spanish culture on Texas, the opportunity to eat some great Tex-Mex food, and your shopping. There are a couple of outlet malls just north of San Antonio you could visit. You could combine this with a trip to Austin since the outlet malls are between San Antonio and Austin.

There are several excellent barbecue places in Austin and the Hill Country, which would be another Texas experience. If you search this forum for Hill Country and barbecue you can see what the local experts generally recommend.

You could also have a look at Fort Worth. Lots of opportunities for western things there, with the Stockyards etc.
