If you like books, it might be worth a detour into Archer City to Booked Up, James McMurtry's used book "store" (it is several buildings).

You'll be driving through a historic area. It was once part of the 19th-century frontier where marauding Comanche and Kiowa bands terrorized Anglo settlers. The US Army established forts to provide protection. Two partially restored forts would be interesting to visit and require only an hour or so added drive time compared to taking US287.

Fort Richardson in Jacksboro is now a state park with staff who are knowledgeable about the period and the fort's history. The hospital has been fully restored complete with beds, instruments, etc. Other buildings are also open.

Fort Belknap near Graham, owned and run by Young County (which was literally the Wild West), has several restored buildings and a museum which wasn't open when I visited, but I understand it is interesting. The famed Butterfield Overland Mail route went through Ft. Belknap for a few years before the US Civil War.

In Decatur, the Waggoner Mansion is interesting to look at and speculate about. It was constructed in the 1880's by the head of a ranching empire. No tours are available, however. waymarking.com/waymarks/WM78K0_Waggoner_Mans…
