Detour to Memphis, only for the Museum Martin Luther King?

We’ll have a trip from Atlanta to Louisiana. I hesitate between the direct road or make a detour to Memphis just to visit the Museum MLK (we’ll take the opportunity to visit a few other things to occupy the rest of the day, but it is less important to us.

Did you visit the museum? Does it worth a 200 miles detour, as we will also visit in what is related to him?

We are not music fans

Thank you so much

The Lorraine Motel/Civil Rights museum is great and if coming to Memphis then yes a must see. There is also a large museum, MLK boyhood home, Ebenezer Baptist church and the national historic center in Atlanta. If coming to Atlanta you need to spend a day taking in these sights. They are all within walking distance of each other and the documentary film shown in the national historic center and museum is excellent.

We have been to Memphis, Birmingham and to the Atlanta civil rights sights many times.

Thank you for your reply.

We will visite all those sites in Atlanta. So the question is more : Is Lorraine Motel/Civil Rights museum in Memphis complementary to them or is it more an unusefull redondancy ? As said, we would have a 200 miles detour especially foir it!

Best regards

It is different because it is the place where MLK was assassinated.

Yes it is a detour. It is more like a 400 mile detour from New Orleans and then another 350 miles back to Atlanta.

I will let the Memphis experts answer your question on that one. Deb who is one of the DE's is excellent and hopefully will give you some insight.

The Civil Rights Museum will no doubt be quite different and leave you with a great deal more to ponder when it reopens after its $26 million expansion in mid 2013, but as for the present you can only drive by, walk around and even walk up to the site where Dr. King stood at the horrible moment. That is really not the way I would want to be exposed to the story of this great man, but it is available for that experience.

Memphis has many other worthwhile attractions in the meanwhile.
