Best Campground in Custer State Park?

We're planning our trip to Black Hills next summer and will be towing our popup camper. We plan on spending about five days in Black Hills mostly hiking and taking in the "must see" sights. We plan on setting up camper in Custer State Park. We prefer sites that are shaded and not too close to the adjacent sites. Would prefer a campground that is centrally located to the area and relatively easy to get to. I've looked at the campground pages on Custer State Park and looked at pictures of campsites. Looks like it would be between Sylvan Lake and Bluebell but am open to other campgrounds in the park. Any suggestions or observations to help with our decision would be greatly appreciated.

We camp most often at Center Lake, many shaded sites, some along the creek.

We camped 3 nights at Sylvan Labor Day weekend and it seemed noisy and more crowded, though the lake itself is lovely and it is an easy drive on hwy 89 to get to the town of Custer.

However, I don't think you can go wrong with any of the CSP campgrounds.

Thanks for your comments. Which campground (Sylvan or Bluebell) is more convenient to or closer to Custer. Plan on eating out most nights. Are there camp stores at the campgrounds where we can purchase food, beverages, etc?

Finally, when should we attempt to make reservations for the Custer Park campgrounds? Can I wait until Feb. and still get good selection?

Sylvan is closer to Custer, which has a full grocery store & restaurants.

Either campground has a restaurant & campstore with limited supplies.

Make reservations as soon as you have your dates, but February should still have good availability for non-holiday dates.

Well, made reservations at Blue Bell! We liked the more open, parklike camping area. Since we are staying 5 days want to be comfortable. Thanks all for your feedback. By the way, seems like a lot of campsites already taken for June.

We spent ten glorious days in Custer SD last July and travel each day for seven days into and around Custer State Park! it was one of the most amazing places we have ever visited and still talk about it. We travel in an RV but stayed in campground in Custer. At any rate we drove thru the campground by State Game Lodge in the Park and really liked the area. My guess is any of the campgrounds would be great fun. We also ate at each of the lodges in the park and had some grand meals. Each area around each of the four lodges is unqiue as is each day of traveling around the park. Only issue we had at all, we ate lunch at State Game Lodge one day while the tour buses were there, which was a huge mistake. Also did not help that the waitress for our table appeared to be "on vacation'also. We had the best breakfast at Blue Bell Lodge and I am still talkingh/thinking about the Walleye sandwich I had in the dining room at Sylvan Lodge, we even got to chat with the Chef.. Where ever you camp I am guessing you will fall in love with this jewel of a park. Custer was also the friendliest town we have ever had the pleasure to visit. We travel a good deal of the year and are plotting our next trip back just to return to Custer State Park. I also understand its good to make your reservations early. Have a grand time.

One more observation, Sylvan Lake area seemed to have the most people there so if you are looking for a little less crowded area I am guessing Blue Bell may serve you better...

Well, we have returned from our wonderful Black Hills Vacation end of June 2010. We decided to stay at Bluebell Campground for our five nights in Custer. We were delighted with our choice. the campground is Shaded with mature Ponderosa Pines and has an open feel. Campsites were clean and level and all convenient to the bathhouse. Bathhouse was kept clean and well lit. Plenty of hot water. Campground hosts very helpful. One of the nicest State Park campgrounds we have ever stayed at.

The Bluebell lodge is a short walk away and all of our meals we ate there were very good. The camp is only about 20 minutes from Custer, so if you wanted to go to town for meals it was convenient--just watch out for Buffalo in the road!! Lots of wildlife in camp. Thankfully there are no wild bears in the Black Hills so didn't have to take bear precautions. All in all we heartily endorse Blue Bell Campground in Custer State Park for campers and will definitely stay there again!

Glad to hear you had a wonderful vacation and experience at Bluebell Lodge campgrounds. Bluebell is one of our favorite resorts. Have camped there as well as stayed in the housekeeping cabins. When you get the time, post a review of the campground and any other places you especially enjoyed.
