Snowmobile tours

i'm hoping someone can help me with locating a snowmobile tour operator in the black hills. I've seen a few places that rent them, but i'd really prefer a guided tour since it will be my first time riding! any suggestions?

I'm not sure who can give you a guided snowmobile tour. You might call one of the rental operators like Spearfish Canyon Lodge and ask them if they have tour leaders.

The Black Hills is a pretty friendly first-time rider area. The trails are clearly mapped and marked and as long as you are on one of the official trails, the riding is very easy. A snowmobile is pretty basic with a throttle on one side of the handlebars and a brake on the other. They'll give you operating instructions at the rental place.

The biggest challenge over the last few years has been picking a time when there's enough snow to ride. Historically the trails open in mid-December but there have been quite a few Christmas and New Years Days over the last few years that have been pretty dry. Usually mid-February is the peak and by mid-March the season is ending.

thanks for the information...i'm visiting from jamaica, so snow is the big highlight of the trip! I was planning to come the week after new year's but i'm pretty flexible as far as timing goes...would a late january, early february trip be better for the winter wonderland I'm hoping for?

Yes, I would say you'd have a better chance at good snow in early February as compared to early January.

President's Day weekend seems to the biggest snowmobile/skiing weekend. Though it won't be terrible, I'd probably avoid that weekend because it can be crowded on the trails. That's Feb. 16-18, 2008.
