Road trip from WA DC to Charlston, SC

We are an adventurous 70s West Coast couple looking to make a 10 day road trip from Washington DC to Charlston, SC in late April. One of us is an artist so a westward route thru Ashville, NC is appealing. We like our creature comforts, good food and wine, love beautiful landscapes, quirky places and experiences. We are also wanting to sense the South with a capital S, lore, history, Place. Any specific suggestions as to route, especially fun towns, hotels, restaurants, tent revivals, any eccentric not to miss places would be much appreciated.

The Grits Festival in St. George was designed with you in mind.

You might also enjoy the UFO Welcome Center in Bowman.

Tent revivals are worship services. Wherever you travel, please respect that other people's religious expression is not a spectator sport.

You might be interested in God's Acre Healing Springs in Blackville, SC. They are actually a mile or two out of the town and all the way back to native americans have been reputed to have healing powers. In modern times, the water has been tested and found to be exceptionally pure and with many beneficial minerals.

Asheville will certainly appear to your artistic and creative juices, but I would not consider it quintessentially "South". Charleston would fit that bill. I would also suggest though a few smaller towns along the way that could help broaden the pallet. Places like Beaufort, S.C., Brevard, N.C, Charlottesville, Va., and so forth.

If you take 66 out of DC (do it in the am, NOT pm) to 29, you can take 29 to Charlottesville, VA. Monticello is close by and a worthwhile stop. There are wineries along that route, and they are scenic but don't compare the area to Napa.

There's a nice picnic area at Lovingston. From Lynchburg take 460 to 81 to 77. Spend the night at Peaks of Otter. The hike up is worth your time.Take 77 south and get off at Fancy Gap or Mt Airy and have lunch. You can either take 77 to 40 and cut across or get on the BRP at Fancy Gap and take that (much longer) route to Asheville.

I agree with beaufort-tiger: Asheville is lovely but you won't find any tent revivals. It's an easy drive from Asheville to Charleston again on the interstate. Stop by Newberry for lunch.

Agree with the others.... Charleston is going to be your most "southern" spot. So much to see and do. Plantations, museum homes, museums, art galleries and more. Charleston was settled in 1670, so includes history of the Revolutionary War, American Civil War, World Wars, to present.

Right. Do you want fine dining?

This is a little out of your way but worth a stop:

We like really nice boutique hotels but are flexible. $$s not as important as experience. High thread counts, lots of hot water and good coffee. As to restaurants we enjoy all cuisines as long as it is well prepared. It doesn't have to be fine dining every night, in fact that is boring, but it needs to be really good cooking and fresh food.

Love Pearl Fryars. I have been reading about this garden and it seems like a do-able detour between Ashville and Charlston. I am a clay sculptor so this is right up my 3 dimensional alley.
