things to do / see near Danville, PA

I'll be in Danville for a month. Any tips on sightseeing, (inexpensive) restaurants, museums? I know there are some great parks in the area, like Ricketts.

Knoebels Amusement Resort in nearby Elysburg, PA is one of the more well-known attractions near Danville. Even if you aren't a big amusement park person, Knoebels is worth a visit as it is a great family park, nothing like the big theme parks across the US. They will have limited hours in September & October, primarily weekends.

The Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine & Steam Engine in Ashland, PA is another attraction in the area. You are able to tour an actual once operating anthracite coal mine. The guides are experienced miners knowledgeable about mining. It's definitely worth a visit.

The Joseph Priestley House in Northumberland, PA may also be of interest to you.

Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA often has concerts, speakers, etc. You can follow these events on their website. The Country Cupboard in Lewisburg is a great place to get a meal.

You will be about an hour and a half drive from the Harrisburg/Hershey area where there are many things to do. Please let me know if you want information about sightseeing in this area.

Thanks! Any good farmers' markets or farms that allow you to pick your own produce?

Sure, I'd like to hear about Harrisburg/ Hershey stuff. I'm going to visit the Mutter Museum in Philly, so things that are similar would be great

I am not personally familiar with farmer's markets in the area; however, doing a google search, I found the Ferry Street Growers' Market at 330 Ferry Street, Danville.

There is also the Sunbury Market House at 436 Market Street, Sunbury which is open Friday & Saturday from 8 am to 2 pm.

If you are in Danville between Sept. 21 & 28, you will definitely want to visit the Bloomsburg Fair. The website below has information on the fair and addition information for the Danville/Bloomsburg area.

Since you're from London, you must like Shakespeare, right? The town of Bloomsburg, PA is about 15 km east of Danville and they're doing a performance of "The Merchant of Venice":

The closest park to Danville is the PPL Montour Reserve (20 km north), which has some nice hiking trails around a lake:

www.pplpreserves.com/preserves/montour/

There are two outdoor stores in the nearby area which have some impressive wildlife displays, where its free to stroll, take pictures and watch the trout:

1) Cabela's in Hamburg, PA

2) Bass Pro Shops in Harrisburg, PA

In addition to the Ricketts Glen waterfall trail, I recommend you hike the trails at World's End State Park for some nice fall scenery. For restaurants in Danville, my top three are:

1) Old Forge Brewing Company, 282 Mill St, Danville

2) John's Asian Cuisine, 100 Mill St, Danville

3) Pine Barn Inn, Danville
