Sisters to Mt Hood - suggestions for stops?

There will be 3 adults, we love to hike and explore. Driving from Sisters to the Old Parkdale Inn, are there places that are "must-see"? We are first time visitors to Oregon. Thanks!

Smith Rock State Park, Crooked River Gorge, and if you're planning to continue on from Parkdale into the Columbia River Gorge, take a detour up to Timberline Lodge.

A few miles off the 197 / 97 junction is the "ghost" town of Shaniko:

I'll chime in with my experience with Shaniko and Smith Rock. I found Shaniko to be pretty much a bust, with little to see and not much in the way of atmosphere. Smith Rock State Park, on the other hand, really delivered the goods. It is astonishingly beautiful. Be warned, though; the walking trails are very open, so bring sun protection.

Hello,

How long is your stay in our area? You could actually run up to Timberline Ski Lodge easily for a dinner and watch the sunset off their driveway. Fantastic sunsets from there. Perhaps catch a Ranger led tour. Timberline is our depression era ski lodge with great artistic work.

Kaleberg, did you visit Peter Skene Ogden viewpoint at the Crooked River Gorge?

I think that's well worth a stop :-)
