Vacation rentals (apartments/condos) in New York City?

I see so many great listings on Tripadvisor for vacation rentals but are these legal in Manhattan? I've read in the New York Times that their mayor is cracking down on these places because they are short-term rentals. I really want to stay in one of these rental apartments/condos in Manhattan. Will I get caught and get into trouble? I'm sorry to sound so paranoid but I would hate to have this ruin our vacation.

thank you.

They are, in the vast majority of cases, illegal and unadvisable.

Nope. Most aren't legal. Check the New York City forum. This is the general forum for all of New York State. The topic is frequently discussed there, and is also in the Top Questions section.

What makes this one (www.apartments2book.com) legal?

Thank you.

Those are actually apartment hotels.

Honestly, any "great condos" you see are likely to be scams. New York City apartments are small and cramped and very expensive.
