We realy have such a special experience here in NM with the winter dances at the Pueblos.
Today we welcomed the New Year at Taos with the Turtle Dance, So good to smell the pinon smoke, sit next too the bubbling streams popping tru the snow, laugh at the rez dogs, and be moved by the ancient drum, jingles and dancing. With the snow on the mountains, and the sun beaming out, it is amazing.
Christmas we attended the dancing at Tesuque Pueblo. Like, Taos, its not about "looking at the dancing", but feeling it, too, and having a treat for your eyes with the birght skies, the bright blankets covering the other "watchers, seeing native elders in wheelchair, teen girls giggling together (without cell phones, at leat then), moms carrying baskets of hot bread, fruit, etc, and infants all dressed in blankets, too.
Even if I only stay a few minutes, I actually feel priviliged to have these events happening in US.
Happy New Year, all.
