side roads with teens

Returning to the northwest we will be passing through Mississippi we'd like to find some great places to stay, eat, and to insect collect. We don't wish to travel on Freeway. We need to know where we can mine, metal detect, swim, fish, and experience the state with half grown boys. We CWP carry so we need heads up on all bans please. We also Bluegrass if there are festivals or jams in the month of June. Add to that a hog hunt and we're off to Louisiana.

Which way are you going? The Natchez Trace Parkway is the 'easy answer' as far as enjoying non-interstate roads through Mississippi, but depends where you're coming from and where in Louisiana you are headed...

We will be coming from TN and have no specific location goal (other than the interests we listed). We prefer to build our trip based on the activity worth doing and food worth driving to. We insect collect so we need to find areas that are not "closed" (like Federal parks). We are not looking for one-lane dirt roads but major roadways we'd like to mostly avoid.

I have been all over Mississippi and love the Natchez Trace for it's natural beauty, but WARNING: it can be very isolating and monotonous to drive (especially for teens). Jump on it for a while and exit when you get bored. I like the area just south of Nashville Tennessee where you can get out and view several waterfalls. if you are headed through north Mississippi, Tupelo is a great place to visit, eat and stay (after all, it is Elvis Presley's Birthplace which you must visit and has great concerts/events at the BancorpSouth arena ). They have a variety of restaurants and places to stay. Might I suggest trying to catch a few concerts/events through out your visit to keep the kids and yourself entertained. Check each area you are driving through for posted events and even a festival or two. Enjoy Mississippi's southern hospitality and take your time!
