Minnesota & Mississippi River without a car

We'll be travelling from Millwaukee to Minneapolis next May by bus, taking our time and stopping off en route.

We think that we'll go to La Crosse and then by way of Winona and Red Wing to Minneapolis.

Please can you suggest places to visit that are accessible by bus with interesting downtown walkable areas.

Are there any other towns that we should see?

I would like to see as much as possible of the Mississippi and maybe take some sort of river boat!

Any ideas of places to stay, mid priced hotels & B&Bs etc?

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Stay close to the river in Minneapolis, the Marriott Depot, Springhill Suites Warehouse District, or even Nicollet Island Inn.

Walk the Stone Arch Bridge, St Anthony Main, and out to WaterPower Park. Head to Boom Island for paddle boat rides.

Here's a pertinent link. I don't know much about this company, but they have made a serious committment to protecting the river--read the Cruise Route Notice.

I would not expect this to be solved before your arrival.

I love the southeastern part of the state along the river. I believe there are river cruises based in both La Crosse and Red Wing. Winona is another nice place to visit, and smaller towns such as Wabasha (with its Eagle Center), Lake City, and Hastings.

In towns such as Winona and Red Wing most of the hotels/motels are along Hwy 61 while b&bs might be closer to their downtown areas. Red Wing in particular has several highly considered b&bs per the reviews here.

Treasure Island Hotel & Casino near Red Wing operates a lunch/dinner cruise on Mississippi. Another great river town is Stillwater on the St. Criox rver and there are riverboat cruises there too. I'm doing one there next week actually. Stillwater is accessible from Minneapolis via public transit bus but not sure of long haul bus service goes there. Stillwater is a nice river town with lots of history anda good selection of hotels and B&Bs. The Water Street Inn is frequently mentioned for location and historic aspects.

One caution about May cruises - if early in the month and if it was a large snowfall Winter or wet Spring water levels can affect operations.
