Hotel/resort suggestions

I need a suggestion for a hotel/resort on 61 north of Duluth. We would like to stay about 1/2 way on the Gitchi Gami trial so we can ride bikes one way one day and the other the next. Open to suggestions. Thanks

Hi - We love the Mangy Moose in Grand Marais; Best Western works if the Moose is full; Grand Marais in general works but there are plenty of options. Good luck!

I guess it would depend on which section you would like to bike on. The trail is not completed yet and the sections that are completed do not hook up yet with the other sections completed.

As Sydney says, much of the rail is still in the planning stages. http://www.ggta.org/map.php. All the stretches are fairly short, but you could stay at Lutsen Sea Villas for a halfway point on the Tofte segment (7.3 miles)

There isn't much between Gooseberry Falls & Beaver Bay, perhaps Split Rock cabins, but it's not half way and you may find better lodging right at Gooseberry or Beaver Bay.

What time of year do you plan to travel?

We plan to be there next Monday,9/18 for 3 nights. I know, hotel rooms will be hard to find. This is a last minute trip and we have always wanted to visit that area in the fall. Will the colors be turning by then?

Oh! So soon! Have you found this site for potential lodging?http://www.northshorevisitor.com/lodging/

I've heard a few of the maples up north have started to turn, so you should see some color when you arrive. www.dnr.state.mn.us/fall_colors/index.html

You might want to bike the 70 mile, paved Willard Munger Trail instead of the partially completed Gitchi-Gami Trail. The Munger trail starts in Duluth and goes south to Hinckley, Minnesota (obviously you can bike it in the other direction too). You could stay in the casino hotel in Hinckley if you do not get a hotel room in Duluth.

We found available rooms at Blue Fin Bay in Tofte. Any opinions on the place? Seems to get good reviews

Bluefin is really nice, you won't go wrong if you stay there. I would also recommend Lutsen Resort just north of there, I stayed in one of the Poplar River Condos last summer and had a great time. If you do stay at Bluefin, definitely try the Pizza at Coho Cafe while you're there!

Bluefin is very nice, and not far from Grand Marais which is a beautiful little town with good restaurants and breweries. If you get there, take a walk around the Northshore Folk Art School. It's very interesting. The colors should be starting to change, but it won't be full-on color yet.

Noticed the link above wasn't working due to punctuation. http://www.ggta.org/map.php
