Detroit Airport Transit

Good day.

I am traveling to Europe from Cancun via Detroit airport.

What is the procedure for transit passengers? I am worried because I only have 1h45mins transit time from landing to taking off with Delta airlines

Your help is appreciated.

You need to clear immigration and customs just like if you were staying in the US. Detroit (like the majority of US airports) does not have "In Transit" terminals like the rest of the world.

1:45 is a legal connection and should be doable. Nobody can predict how busy immigration will be, so just walk fast to try to get to the head of the line. You will need to claim any checked bags after you clear immigration, then take them past customs to the designated baggage drop. That only takes a couple minutes, unless you get selected for a bag search by customs. After customs you have to re-clear security, but there is a dedicated checkpoint for international arrivals. That will deposit you back at the center of the A concourse which should be near your gate for your connection.

Is Cancun one of the locations where you clear US customs before leaving that country?

No pre-clearance in Mexico. Only Canada, a few spots in the Caribbean and Ireland.
