Train into Detoit

I was thinking of taking a train from Chicago to Detroit. What is the Amtrak station like there?

There are Amtrak stations in Dearborn, just a few miles west of Detroit, Detroit New Center Area and Royal Oak about 11 miles north of the downtown. You'd probably want to choose the one that's nearest to what you're planning.

All consist of only a small waiting room and the Detroit and Dearborn stations have ticket windows. The Dearborn station is close to Greenfield Village, Fairlane Mall, the Hyatt, Ritz and many other hotels.

The Detroit station is about 4 miles north of downtown. The Art Institute and Wayne State Univ are about a mile south but there isn't much around it. You'd be able to catch a cab to a downtown hotel but there's no place within walking distance of the station and the neighborhood may be a bit questionable if you did choose to walk.

The Royal Oak station is in the middle of it's downtown which is filled with trendy restaurants and boutiques, hotels would be a short cab ride away.
