2 week road trip

Help needed in planning a two week road trip starting and ending in Boston. Been to Boston before so will only stay a couple of days in the city and then want to head out. Looking for advice on the 'must see' places to visit - we are in our late 30's, we want to see some foliage, lighthouses, covered bridges, bit of walking/cycling and towns to mooch around if that helps...ta

Sounds like a good plan. Are you coming during "foliage season"? Early to mid-October would be best for leaf peeping. When you leave Boston, I'd recommend you head North on Rt. 1 which keeps you right along the coastline up to Maine. Some stops of note: In Rockport, MA, go to Halibut Point State Park (see post under that name). Once you leave that area, hop on Rt, 95 North until you get past Portland, ME, then move back over to Rt. 1 which stays on the coast. It is slower than Rt. 95 and the views aren't so great until you get beyond Portland. Plan to stay at least a night or two in the Camdon/Rockport Maine area. Then head on up to Bar Harbor/Acadia National Park and do the shore road around the park, but don't leave out the ride to the top of Cadilac Mountian. Make sure you stop at Thunder Hole. From there consult a roadmap to get the best route West into New Hampshire. You can find lots of covered bridges and foliage. A popular route back down would be the Kangamangus Highway. Top route for foliage! I would recommend making reservations for a couple nights in that area ahead of time. That is a very popular time and hotels could easily be sold out. B&B's are a good option, as well.
