oceanside day trip

We will be spending the first week in June in DC. We were hoping to take a day trip that Friday to the beach and spend the night there or in Baltimore. We should be taking an afternoon flight out of Baltimore.

What beach city would you recommend (and why) that would be convenient to Baltimore and DC since we won't have much time. We will be traveling with 7yr old and 12 yr old and we don't travel to the ocean much as we are from Illinois.

Assuming you definitely to reach the Atlantic instead of stopping at the Chesapeake Bay, I'd suggest an early start, Ocean City, Rehoboth, or Bethany for the day, then back to Annapolis for the evening, sleep, and a morning visit before heading to BWI.

This would be a aggressive plan being that many places Ocean side properties require a two night minimum on weekends, and traffic going to the beach across the almost 5 mile Chesapeake Bay Bridge on Friday's or even Thursday night can be a nightmare.

Could you come back another time for a beach vacation? Looking at 5 or more hours of driving. I guess you could leave late nite before beach day and stay in ocean city and then leave late that day to return to hotel near airport. People mistake Baltimore for being close to ocean when it is just close to water.

5 hour drive roundtrip doesn't sound bad to us. We are used to 2 hr drives one way frequently just to get to a bigger town to shop, etc. We had looked at a map and figured 5 hours... but I don't know what traffic is like or what town to stay in. We were hoping for something fairly cheap.

Traffic can be moving along at 50+ or slogging depending on day and time. Relatively cheap- stay around Salisbury or Ocean Pines or any of the small towns just inland in MD or DE. Your beach day can be had over an approximately 20 mile stretch between OC and Rehoboth. OC is known for its boardwalk if that is of interest.

Probably not as interested in the rides but for people watching and greasy food, it can be fun.

If you really don't mind the drive it's not that bad doing it round trip in one day if you are pressed for time. I've had to drive back and forth in one day on several occasions due to family logistics during a vacation, and while it wasn't optimal, it wasn't too bad.

If you simply want a day at the ocean, you can leave early in the morning on Friday and you should not hit traffic. You can go here destateparks.com/park/…index.asp if you just want a basic day at the beach for sunbathing and swimming. There is a snack bar as well as restrooms and showers so you can clean up before your return trip back toward the airport. It will be much cheaper if you stay back near the airport rather than at a hotel by the beach. If you really don't want the drive back after a long day at the beach or if you want to have some fun in the evening while you are down there, then I'd go to Ocean City where there are many hotels to choose from (or you stay outside of Ocean City in W. Ocean City for cheaper hotels, or start heading back toward Baltimore and stay in Salisbury as suggested which is about 30 minutes west of Ocean City. If you stay in Ocean City, you could do the boardwalk at night with the kids or mini-golf or something like that.

You are going early enough in June that traffic should not be bad if you are driving down there on a Friday morning and returning either Friday night or Saturday morning. You will be driving against traffic coming back either Friday night or Saturday morning. If driving back on Saturday morning, you could spend the late morning/lunchtime walking around downtown historic Annapolis, which is about 30 minutes from BWI.

I totally understand wanting to get to the ocean being from the midwest, and personally don't think driving 2.5 hrs each way is that bad in one day for the opportunity to experience the Atlantic (ocean) for a day. Given that it doesn't seem like a big deal to you either, I think you would be fine doing it!

Just to the south of Ocean City is Assateague Island, you can enjoy the beach and the kids might like seeing the wild ponies (please don't touch or feed):

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assateague_Island

If you go to the Ocean City Forum and click "Things to Do" you'll see there's quite a bit to see and do, in addition to 10 miles of beach.
