Posted this by mistake under New Hampshire. It should be under Maine. Thanks again.
We are 67 yr. old retirees from California. New England Fall Foliage is 1st on our bucket list. We want off-the-beaten-path as much as possible. We are arriving Boston on Oct. 3 traveling up the Maine coast, over to Bethel, ME and driving above the White Mts. on highway 2. Visiting northern Vermont and down highway 100 into southern Vermont and visiting friends in PA Oct. 10 and flying out of Pilly. We to see color in out- of-the- way places and avoid bumper-to-bumper traffic (remember, we're from crowded west coast). We like easy hikes, canoe trips on lakes or rivers, lighthouses, uncrowded covered bridges, mom & pop places to eat and economical inns, hotels or motels. I know we will be coming a peak season, so that may not be possible, but that's where I need your help. I've been reading so many posts, making notes and here's what I've come up with:
Thurs., Oct. 3, fly into Boston - pick up rental car and drive to Saugus and begin our trip Friday a.m. We are early risers so will get on road early after breakfast at the motel/inn.
Fri., Oct. 4 - Drive up the coast to Camden. Thinking of driving through Ogunquit, Kennebuckport, Biddeford Pool, Cape Elizabeth, Boothbay, seeing Nubble & Port Head Lighthouses on the way. A Tripadisor suggested going through Boothbay and Damariscotta, continuing the backroads to Camden. Good idea or not? Are there any other points of interest or different lighthouses you think we should see?
Lobster dinner or lobster rolls? Are all lobster rolls on HOT DOG buns? I also saw a recipe for lobster thermidor that looked wonderful. Any suggestions for restaurants or shacks would be very helpful. Thinking of Ship to Shore in Owls Head near Camden or do you recommend some other place?
Plan to hike up to Mt. Battie in Camden (or should we drive it? easy hike like they say, or not?) After dinner we will drive to Augusta and stay at the Quality Inn many have given high ratings for.
Sat., Oct. 5 drive to Bethel, ME and spend time near Screw Augur Falls and Sunday River Covered Bridge. Are there easy hikes in the area? Any suggestions for places to stay? Is there color to see in that area? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.
