From Acadia to the Highlands?

Hello,

We will be coming to Maine the first of June. Starting in Portland and driving up the coast to Acadia. After that I wanted to spend sometime in the The Maine Highlands: Bangor, Katahdin, & Moosehead Lake area before heading back to Portland to fly home. We love the outdoors, hiking, kayaking, etc. Can anyone tell me where to start when looking at the Highland area? Any suggests of not to miss activities.

Thanks

Bangor is not in the mountains. It is simply a small city which functions as a market center for the area, with a shopping mall and the usual big box stores.

To get started on things to do in the Moosehead Lake region you can check out: http://www.mooseheadlake.org/ You might also search on Greenville, Maine: http://www.greenvilleme.com/

Katahdin is a bit more difficult to visit and will require some planning if you want to hike or stay near there. It is very rugged and primitive. Check out: http://www.baxterstateparkauthority.com/

TayBay -- It's a bit further afield from Acadia. but you might also take a look at the Rangeley Lakes region -- lots of lakes and hiking....
