Weather in September

We are going to Maine in September and was wondering if anyone there could tell us about the weather, would it be cold, or hot? This is our first time in New England!

many thanks

It's not likely to snow in September, but it could be very chilly if you watch the sunset from Cadillac Mountain or get up very early to hike. Midday could be chilly, or it could be sunny and short sleeve weather. Depends on where you are going and what part of September.

The best plan is to bring enough clothes to dress in layers, and to bring a couple of sweaters or fleece tops unless you plan to pick up a nice Maine sweathirt from a local tee shirt shop.

You probably will find long pants better than shorts unless you are visiting in very early September. And, closed-toe shoes with socks will probably be better than sandals.

Early September is a big difference from Late September (even moreso if your talking October... but that's beside the point..). When it's cooler it's my FAVORITE kind of season (Shorts and sweatshirt season) Good to plan on that anyway for the evenings. But honestly, it can be VERY warm (although, thankfully not really humid) or it can be downright chilly. Often both in the same day. Sorry not to be much help, but that's the way the "in between" seasons are here.. gotta be prepared for everything!

Hi folks! As you have probably gathered from the posts here, the answer to your question "would it be cold, or hot?" is, Yes!

Maine is a fairly large state, with a good deal of variation in climate north to south, and coastline to mountains; however, as with so much of New England, there is a wide fluctuation of temperatures and conditions even in one spot, as much as 20 or 30 degress in a 24 hr. period - and that's on a normal day.

September is wonderful, usually farily dry and cool. The days can reach temps in the 70's, even up to 80. The nights can easily drop into the forties or lower. Many areas experience their first frost in September.

The coast line is generally more temperate than the mountains. You'll find layers work best.

I would bring: Walking shorts, Cotton T's - short sleeve and long, pants that dry quickly, fleece for warmth, windproof/waterproof outer shell. For hiking you will want sturdy shoes and socks, sandles are fine for in town. Kicking around the shore a quick drying waterproof sandal is great, the Maine coast is mostly rocky. A decent pair of dress slacks and a blouse or sweater will do for most dining establishments. If you are doing any serious back country hiking you would want to include synthetic T's, long johns, wool hat, gloves.

I'd love to hear more about your plans. I hope you enjoy our beautiful corner of the world!
