where best for whale watching

Dear all

Am travelling up to Acadia from Boston in late Sept/early Oct and am thinking about whale watching.

Any tips on best place to go from, best watching experiences, best time of day to go, best companies, who to avoid etc

Also -is there any where not chintzy or naff to stay in Portland ?

And where is the best place to eat there for seafood and/or Italian without neccesarily looking for lobster

Thanks for any help you can give...

The best place to stay in Portland is the Old Port District. There you might like the Portland Regency Hotel, Hilton Garden Inn Portland Downtown Waterfront or the Portland Harbor Hotel.

Regarding places to eat seafood, there are many choices from casual to high-end. Portland is known for having many exceptionally good restaurants for a town of its size. You might want to print out the restaurant ratings from the Tripadvisor forum or another directory, e.g., downeast.com/Dining-Guide/index.php… and then walk around and pick the one that appeals most to you. Fore Street and Street & Co are old favorites, but new restaurants open all the time and some become instant faves, such as Bar Lola, see http://www.barlola.net
