Best time to visit

Hi,

My wife and l will be visiting for a couple of weeks between Aug and Oct 2010. We will be landing at DFW ex direct Australia.

Could you please recommend the best time to visit during that period? I guess we would like to avoid school holidays etc,

I surmise we would hire a car for a couple of weeks and thence travel around the SE (except florida) portion of the US.

Thanks in advance

As to a time to visit within the dates you mention, the later the better. In south La. and New Orleans, the summer heat can be pretty uncomfortable until early October. October is usually our driest month and weather-wise is perhaps the best time of the year to visit, particularly the latter half of the month. August and September are our peak hurricane (cyclone) months on the Gulf Coast and the potential for storms can disrupt plans. Cooler air starts pushing in during October and diminishes the threat considerably. There are lots of good festivals state-wide in October. Trips into the swamps are more comfortable then. Have a great trip!

Our hearts go out to the good people of Queensland dealing with the catastrophic flooding - something we know something about.

Yes our thoughts are on those who suffered from the recent floods. I too suggest you come in October which will be cooler and drier. The drive from Dallas to NOLA is an easy drive. Plan to stop around Lafayette, LA for good cajun cuisine. Spend several nights in the FQ in NOLA. You could drive by the MS Gulf Coast to Mobile, AL and then go N to Montgomery, AL, Birmingham, AL and stop for a few nights in Nashville, TN. Then head W to Memphis, TN for a few nights on Beale Street and try the great Memphis BBQ. Head S through the MS Delta on down to Natchez, MS and then head back to Dallas.

Thank you for your ideas. Once we confirm dates l will certainly come back seeking some more specific assistance. October looks better.

Our floods are indeed horrific. Thankfully our water is moving away, be that as it may, neigh on the entire state of Queensland is pitching in to assist. Thousands upon thousands are simply turning up in Brisbane and rural areas just wanting to help.

We are lucky to have excellent leadership and remarkable support. Thansk for your kind words.
