Castle Rock and/or Monument Rocks.

Hi all

We will be going on a road trip and will be in KS in october. We wonder if we should go to Castle Rock or Monument Rocks or both.

We have an awd rental SUV but don't know how rough the roads are between those 2 places. We are not on a tight timeframe.

TIA

They are different enough that I would do both. They are impressive in different ways. It think that the badlands at Castle Rock is the neatest feature of the two, but Monument Rocks is probably more picturesque. When you go to Monument Rocks, be sure to stop at the fun, quirky Keystone Gallery a few miles away.

You have to be careful driving on the two rut leading to Castle Rock, but I have done both of them in small cars without a problem, so you should be fine.

Since you have the time, the bluffs at Cedar Bluffs State Park would compliment the other two attractions.

Thanks. Cedar Bluff SP looks like a great addition. We'll do all three of them and even may add Scott SP. We love the prairie!.

Lake Scott State Park is a surprising contrast to the prairie around it.

If you haven't aleady found this web site, it could give you more ideas: http://kansastravel.org/chalkkansas.html

Thanks for the link. Already bookmarked it. We'll be coming from NE. Think we'll take Road to Nowhere (83) to Monument Rocks and Scott Sp. Drive east on 4 till the dirtroad to Castle Rock. Get to Cedar Bluff to Hays and Lucas, drive to Worlds largest ball of twine. Head over to Minneapolis for Rock City. See Mushroom Rock SP, go to Hutchison for Cosmophere and Space center. To Park Cty for the sculpture and Wichita for Keepers of the Plains. After that to Arkansas City for the land run museum (been to Guthrie before). Take the road via Elk Falls to West Mineral. But we have been to eastern and southern KS before so prob already get into OK after Arkansas City. Btw Lighthouse, we have been to Sleeping Bear dunes,Mackinac Bridge and the UP last year. Loved it but is was cold and rainy so we had to skip Mackinac Island.

Think we'll take 3 days for this KS leg, maybe longer. We don't want to rush and we have 10 weeks for our cross country trip.

Since you will be in Hutchinson you might consider this:

www.deepspacemuseums.com. It includes both the Cosmosphere and the Underground salt museum.

Wow! That sounds like a great trip.

Patrick is spot on about how good those two museums are. Doing them well would add most of a day.

Since you are ending up in far southeast Kansas, I would then drop dwon to Historic ROute 66. Only 16 miles of The Route are in Kansas, but those miles are packed with the kind of things that it sounds like you would enjoy.

You don't say when you will be here. Your trip might be the same time as one of the festivals. There are several good ones along that route.

You visited Michigan?

I thought that your screen name looked familiar.

Thanks for the link Patrick.

We only know our KS trip will be in october but the dates aren't fixed. We always wing it and make no reservations at any place. Yes we visited Michigan last year and loved it. For R66, we have done R66 several times the whole way from Sl Louis to LA (not between St. Louis and Chicago) and back and been to the KS part as well. Short but nice indeed. Galena-Riverton-Baxter Springs. Women on the route with the truck from Cars of course!

Castle Rock is on private property but visitors are welcome. There are no services available so be prepared with your own water, food, etc. (Please leave only footprints). It is also off paved roads so be aware of the road conditions if wet. For a bit of the history of the area - ancient ice age ocean bottoms, it might also be worth a stop at the Ficke Fossil Museum at Oakley or Sternberg Museum at Hays.
