Welcome to the forum, AuntCarol!
Neither month is better. It's not the heat, it's the humidity. You might plan your travels around an annual event that appeals to you. The Iowa State Fair is typical Midwest fun in Des Moines from August 7 -17. Davenport has the Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz festival July 31 to August 3 and the Mississippi Valley Fair from July 29 to August 3. Indianola hosts the National Balloon Classic from July 25 to August 2. You might avoid those cities at that time if the events do not appeal to you. Travel Iowa has an events calendar: http://www.traveliowa.com/calendar?navid=5&

Thank you for your reply! Yes, the humidity. Something we are not used to coming from CA. I've just always wanted to visit Iowa, Kansas, MO and TN in the summer when all the veggies are ripe and things are growing. My hubby thinks I'm nuts but he's coming along anyway :). Appreciate your suggestions.
Thank you for your reply. School sessions don't impact us anymore. We are thinking of traveling 7/12-7/26. Starting in Nashville, going to MO., KS., IA. IL. KY. and back to TN. The trip is about 1600 miles. Just going to kinda poke around :).
You should plan on a weekend here in Des Moines. Catch the Farmers Market on Saturday morning 7am-noon…chock full of freshly grown veggies and fruits, not to mention many vendors selling all kinds of foods to eat! It's one of the best markets in the country! It's downtown and has a website that will give you more information. I'd say that would be a highlight of an Iowa stop. Spend the afternoon in the Sculpture Park and then, cool off by a visit to the Des Moines Art Museum west of the downtown area. Dinner? Des Moines is exploding with fine and casual dining and lots of fun bars to finish off your evening!!
If you’re here during one of our “heat waves” you will experience an outdoor sauna like none other. It can be suffocating to people that aren’t accustomed to humid climates. But don’t let it sway you because all businesses will have their A/C cranked. I agree with pesp regarding Des Moines. It has some of the state’s best restaurants! Lots to choose from too.

Actually, August would be good. The State Fair will be going on in the middle of August. But you are right, both months could be very warm.
Des Moines sounds great! Love farmer's markets. And we will be traveling through Des Moines so I will try to make it on the weekend. Thanks for your reply!
We have heat waves here in CA but not much humidity. Sounds fun :). Thanks for your note!
Would love to see the Iowa State Fair. That's a biggie!! Thanks for your note.
