A Car Trip From DC To Georgia and Florida In Spring 2014

Hello,

we are planning to go by car from DC to Florida for a DC Spring Break April 11- April 20, 2014. We are two adults and to kids (8,3) and would love to see the most attractive parts of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. I guess we have to skip the north and just drive through (and do it in a different time). We might leave already in the afternoon on April 10, drive to Richmond, sleep somewhere there and then continue. We know we should show the kids the Disney World, but otherwise it doesn't have be about amusements parks. We, the parents, have been to Florida already three of four times, but many years ago.

We were thinking about stopping in Charleston and Savannah (the great old cities - I loved as a teenager Gone With The Wind:) and then continuing to Florida. I remember that swimming with the manatees in Crystal River was gorgeous and we would love to include as well the Cape Canaveral and Everglades. Otherwise we do not know. Do you have, please, any ideas, what might be interesting for us? It could be a nice quiet beach day, some old south city or plantation (but we should stay more or less close to the east coast when traveling south, but in Florida we want to travel around) or some natural wonder. The kids are good in travel, we did a big southwest car trip with them last summer. And one more important thing - we have pretty small budget for our trip.:( We might sometimes camp or sleep in a cheap motel or cabana - never mind, the most important think is to see as much and as interestingly as possible.:))))

Thank you very much,

Marketa and Martin*

Charleston and Savannah are both great even for kids. Amelia Island, FL is great also. You can find affordable lodging. If you need some suggestions for things to see and do just let us know.

Beach, Civil war forts, lighthouses, plantations, etc.

I think your kids are too young for Disney -- your 8 year old will remember it but it will be a big waste of time for the 3 year old (and more difficult for you as a parent). I would stick to the beaches, all are pretty much the same along the east coast until you get south of Daytona, where the water will slowly turn from brown to the beautiful blue the more south you get. Myrtle beach has a small amusement park to give your 8 year old a "history break". Savannah, Charleston and St. Augustine are very rich in American history. The barrier islands of GA are also a great experience.

This is a cool destination if you can find out when the turtles will be hatching this year : floridashutchinsonisland.com/wildlife-on-hut…

Skipping Disney would definitely help your budget. Its almost $100 per person per day.

You might enjoy Tybee Island or Georgia's Golden Isles.

I might even skip south and central Florida and head for the Gulf Coast. St Andrews Park in Panama City has camping and the beaches are gorgeous. PC, Destin, and Gulf Shores have some smaller amusement parks that would be a lot cheaper than Disney.

Hello,

Thank you very much!

We decided that we skip Disney World and Charleston:).

What do you think, please, about this itinerary:

4/10 afternoon leaving DC, heading South, overnight south of Richmond

4/11 drive to Savannah, stay for two nights

4/12 stay in Savannah, walk through it and see some plantation nearby (any suggestions, please - something old south and charming:)

4/13 Savannah to St. Augustine, see St. Augustine, nearby beach???? Do you know, where to sleep, please?

4/14 St. Augustine to Cape Canaveral (+beach, oversleep nearby?)

4/15 Cape Canaveral to the Keys, Honda Bahia Beach (suggestions for a hotel, motel, camping, please?)

4/16 staying Honda Bahia Beach

4/17 The Everglades (hotel, motel, camping?)

4/18 Everglades to Crystal River, swimming with the manatees, night there.

4/19, 4/20 driving back to DC.

I know it is pretty full, but it worked last Summer in the Southwest pretty well with our kids so hopefully it will be okay this Spring as well.:)

If you, please, know something special, what we have missed (a beautiful plantation near Savannah for example, nice beach or lighthouse), please write it down, it will be a big help. We have to skip Hutchinson Island as well /the turtles are hatching in June:(/.

Thank you very much,

Martin and Marketa*

Savannah area plantation take a look at Wormsloe Plantation- I do not think it is open on Monday so plan accordingly.

Also go out to Tybee Island and enjoy a kid friendly beach area.

There are no plantations with houses and gardens anywhere near Savannah.
