suggestions for drive holiday after US Masters

we're going to the US Masters in April next year and want to take about 14 days after to drive around. Not sure what's best itinerary as we don't know the area at all. We're flexible as to what airport we fly home from and very open to any suggestions of places to see and things to do. As its April, we don't expect weather will be 'beach friendly' but we think we would still like to see the coast - and being from Ireland, a 'bit of rain' doesn't bother us!! I know this is the Georgia forum, but we're also wondering about touring Louisianna - heading west after the golf rather than east - any thoughts? Last thing - if we do head east, taking in Savannah, Charleston and the coast, is it at all feasible to then head to New Orleans or is this a crazy notion? We would be willing to either drive there or even fly from somewhere like Atlanta if its a goer - cos we'd love to see the place! Any suggestions would really be appreciated!

Heading to New Orleans is not a crazy notion at all. It's only about an 8 hour drive and you have two weeks to enjoy the area. Here's an idea for a routing and most of the segments are less than 3 hours of driving time.

Fly into Atlanta -

Drive to Augusta for the Masters (get a reservation for hotel/etc. as soon as possible) - 2 hour drive

Augusta to Savannah - 2.5 hour drive

Savannah to St. Augustine, FL (or to St. Mary's for a day trip over to Cumberland Island) - less than 3 hours

St. Augustine to Pensacola - and sugar sand beaches - less than 6 hours

Pensacola to NOLA - 3 hours

NOLA back to Atlanta for flight out - less than 7 hours

Great ideas and between Savannah and St. Augustine, FL we love the Amelia Island area. It has an old Civil War fort, lighthouse, historic downtown, and nice beach area.

Flying in and out of the same airport will mean cheaper car rentals. Flying in and out of different airports can be very expensive because of one way drop fees.
