Perhaps you would enjoy Helen, GA. Bavarian themed town on the Chattahoochie river. Various accomodation types are available from motels/inns, cabins, B&Bs. We have stayed at the Chalet Kristy on the river, it is a small motel, economically priced, off the main street through town and on a scenic curve of the river. It may or may not be what you desire as some people would prefer a bit more ritz. Rooms have a mini-frig and microwave. Helen can be very crowded on weekends. Plenty of restaurants also. Also very close to Unicoi State Park and Anna Ruby Falls.
Chateau Elan is a lovely resort, but have you thought of Evergreen Marriott in Stone Mountain Park? Check out their website at www.evergreenresort.com. It's only minutes from Atlanta and has a lovely serene atmosphere. I've used the spa there and it was very relaxing. We booked the Romancing the Stone package and really enjoyed our stay.
Head over to Washington, Ga....the best kept secret in the state. For a town of only about 6,000 people it is overflowing with things to see and to. Consistantly ranked as one of the prettiest towns in the state, with victorian, colonial, and ante-bellum homes all around you. There are three museums, and the oldest public library in the state there...a gem in itself. The town boasts many lovely bed and breakfasts and recently just opened the Fitzpatrick Hotel right on the square. A victorian beauty restored to its original turn of the century condition. Unlike many small towns that have seemed to withered away, Washington always is alive and moves at an exciting pace. I highly recommend it! Everyone who visits cant believe what it holds!http://www.kudcom.com/www/http://www.washingtonwilkes.com/site/http://thefitzpatrickhotel.com/index.php
We love this lake home located in Hiawasee Ga
It's only a few miles from Helen, Ga
At this website you will also find a link to an apartment in Atlanta that the same people own and rent out. Very nice people. We have not stayed in their Atlanta rental, but have stayed at their lake home twice and absolutely love it

I've stayed at Lucilles Mountain Top Inn. It is just a couple miles outside Helen, GA. It is in Sautee, a small artist town. It is on top of a mountain and has fantastic 360 degree views. The owners helped us with recommendations of what to see and do, make reservations. www.lucillesmountaintopinn.com
