NE Fall 2014 trip arrive JFK late afternoon

Travel date 10/18/14. Looking for travel tips regarding where to stay day of arrival. Arrive from Calif. to JFK 3 p.m. & pick up car. Would like to drive 1-2 hours before stopping in CT for 1 night to recharge. General trip outline is then continue north to Vermont Green Mountains stay 2 nights. Continue to New Hampshire White Mountains for 2 nights. Continue to Portland, ME 2 nights. On to Boston 2 nights. Back to JFK return car, public transport to Manhattan for remaining 6 nights. Prefer smaller towns, non-chain hotels, 3 or 4 star properties. Suggestions for 1st night stay, Green Mtns, White Mtns. stay for day trip bases appreciated. Thank you!

When getting to Boston consider ditching your car there. Parking and renting the car for 2 days you will save money getting a train back down to NYC. Public transport is awesome in Boston.

If your not getting in til 3 and not getting out of the airport tile 430ish maybe consider staying in western mass (great barrington/lenox/Williamstown) that night. Then you will get to drive up into VT and see the landscape, otherwise you will be traveling in the night time and missing some sights.

By the time you claim luggage and get your rental car, you are going to be in the heart of rush hour. Also the route you choose to travel, will determine suggestions for places to stay. Since you might be tired from your flight across the country and have the real possibility of being in rush hour traffic, I would opt for lower Fairfield County hotels around Westport, or Fairfield, CT. If you post your planned route of travel, trip advisors could give you selections for the areas you travel.

I would from Boston follow Mass Tpk to Worcester and South on 395 to Connecticut. Take off at Brooklyn, Conn. and drive the scenic route for about 45mins. Plenty of historic town greens etc… to Norwich, then 395 South to East Lyme, off at Rte 1 then follow through to Old Lyme and the Connecticut River. North on Rt 9 to Essex about 5 minutes up Rte 9 from I95 and then have a coffee or sandwich in the historic port town of Essex.

then back to NYC.

I d take the last suggestion and get off in Putnam. They have some great restaurants for lunch. Then pick Up Rte 169 in Woodstock or Pomfret and head yo Norwich.

Haha, Putnam. No really, the Courthouse is nice and we do have 1 whole hotel as well. I will say that if you are going to Boston and Portland, Putnam is a straight shot up. We also have a lot of antique stores - busiest town you'll find in the area.

It's too bad you aren't leaving during the summer months, there are some beautiful coastal towns in ME that are wonderful anyway, but fantastic in the Summer.

I don't know if the OP has booked much, but I would consider changing some of the plan to better the logistics.

1)NYC 5 nights

2) Take Metro North train to New Haven, CT and pick up rental car near station (Hertz has pick up service from the station)

3) 2 nights green mountains

4) New Hampshire White mountains 2 nights

5) 2 nights Portland? (Consider staying in Rockport, MA or a smaller town on the way to Boston)

6) Boston 2 nights

7) NYC 1 night (before returning home)

As stated earlier, leave the rental car in Boston and train back to NYC or return it in New Haven, CT (depends on the drop off charge and parking fees for Boston).

Renting the car from the airport can be twice as expensive as renting it in New Haven, CT. New Haven is easy to reach from downtown Manhattan Grand Central to New Haven (Or the pricier Amtrak from Penn Station)
