Favorite Casino

I know some people have strong opinions about CT's two casinos, Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun. Some devoted fans will only frequent one or the other.

I actually like both of them for different reasons. I think gambling is better at Foxwoods where you can find $5 table action. Mohegan removed $5 tables a while ago which means you have to lay out a lot of dough to play there.

Mohegan has better food choices and the quality of the food is superior to Foxwoods. They also have more entertainment venues and shopping, so non-gamblers have plenty to do.

However, the rooms at Foxwoodsl are better. Well, both hotels have nice rooms, but the problem with Mohegan Sun is noise. You can hear what's going on in the other rooms through the air/ac vents. It can really keep you up at night!

I don't want to know about what you heard overnight through the AC vents; I'll just take your advice and run.

I'm planning a trip there this Thankgiving, perhaps for the day, with family including a few kids. Any special recommendations about WHICH casino or even what to expect when I get there?

BTW, I've always heard that Mohegan is a lot better but I've never heard the scoop on why. I did go to Foxwood about 5-10 years ago (with a few years of its opening) and it was dreadfully boring with card tables and an overabundance of pink and teal native decorations. Am I misremembering? If not, has it changed?

Anyway, looking forward to the trip. Anything you can tell me will help!

mv shark,

You remember Foxwoods correctly. I think it is nice compared to say the Atlantic city casinos. They have a large Indian museum there now. You can probably find information on it on their site. I haven't been in it, but I know they spent a heap of money to build it, so it may be a good family stop.

I also prefer Mohegan Sun to Foxwoods. Mohegan Sun is more visually stimulating. The original casino refered to as the casino of the Earth is decorated in rustic logs for suppot posts, etc and has 4 areas, with a large fake tree decorated to look like one of the four seasons in each area. in the center is the Wolf's den where they put on free entertainment (this area is only accessible to age 21+). There is a new addition to the casino (which they spent almost $1 billion dollars to build!), which is called the casino of the Sky. This has a small mountain in the center made of illuminated stain glass, which you can walk up inside where there is a lounge. Above the mountain is a planiterium which very slowly changes from day to night and back again, with imiges like clouds and hot air ballons projected onto it! The area connecting the two main casinos is nicely decorated and has many stores and resturants. Here, you will find the famous indoor waterfall, which you can see on their web site.

If you are looking for a side trip, there is a free navel (submarine) museum in Groton where you can see models and actually go into a 1940's vintage sub!

Between the 2 major casinos in Connecticut I will only go to Foxwoods casino and hotels. The Grand Pequot Casino is always bright and feels spacious, not cramped as many are. The 360 Casino at

Foxwoods is also very nice with a good choice of slots.

Staff people are always helpful and the Grand Pequot Hotel is wonderful. Even the standard rooms are large with many amenities. I have also stayed at Two Trees Hotel which has its own charm.

I have not found the staff at Mohegan Sun at all friendly, not even the person who takes reservations.

I have never stayed at the hotel because of the rudeness of the people who answered the phone.

The shopping and slots playing is good, but I like to stay for 3-5 nights so Mohegan Sun is out of the picture, they are also more expensive.

We love Mohegan Sun for the atmosphere, shopes, restaurants and entertainment. We have only been to Foxwoods twice when it first opened and we haven't gone back. Mohegan Sun has great entertainment, we've been to 5 concerts this year alone. We go there for everything except the gambling - we maybe threw away $20 with all our visits this year. I can't speak for the hotel rooms since we live within an hour and have never stayed overnight. They do have an excellent kids area called Kids Quest. They offer babysittign for kids from 6 months to 13 years old I believe. It's a very secure, super clean, fun place for children. Our kids love the Odessey Store with all it's aquariums and the waterfalls and the plantarium.
