Skiing week prior to Christmas - traveling alone

I have a week to ski from 19th - 25th December 2012.

I am traveling alone so would prefer to stay in a b&b or lodge type accommodation where I can meet people. I'd consider a good quality back packers or hostel too (I'm 40 so beyond the grit of party backpackers!). I would prefer to avoid large family style resorts.

I'll be traveling from New York and will not have a car so good transport options will be important.

Appreciate that this is not the best time to ski with costs going up and snow not always reliable but dates are not negotiable.

I'd prefer to ski colorado (I worked at Keystone in 1993) but am open to other states that would have reliable dry snow (not east coast) at that time of year.

I'm an intermediate - advanced skier.

Which would be the best mountain and does anyone have advice on where to stay - my internet trawling has not turned up anything useful for an independent traveller.

You could try the Fireside Inn in Breckenridge. Just about 3 blocks or so off of Main St. http://www.firesideinn.com/

Fireside is a backpakers but also a B&B at the same time....so a little of the best of all worlds.

There is a free bus stop just outside so it seems to meet most of your requirements.

Not sure if there is one "best" mountain but if you decide to check out Crested Butte I'd suggest looking at the Ruby of Crested Butte.

While there may be no best mountain, The Ruby of Crested Butte was ranked the #1 Bed and Breakfast in Colorado by Tripadvisor.com.

Purple Mountain Lodge is a more low key option in Crested Butte.

There's a great free bus and the town is easily walked so a vehicle is not needed.

Hi TracyAnn. I just stayed at the http://www.allairetimbers.com

Allaire Timbers Inn and thought of your post. I think it would be perfect for a solo traveller. Everyone was very congenial. Great breakfast! A very lodgey ski feel to it!

You might consider Alta, Utah as well. While there is little development around the base area, there are a handful of all-inclusive slope side lodges that have both shared dorms as well as private hotel rooms. The dining rooms and common areas are conducive to social gatherings and meeting new people, as there is really nothing else to do outside of the lodges after the lifts close.

The skiing is about as good as it gets anywhere. And it's super easy to get to - about a 50 minute shuttle from Salt Lake Airport.

But if you're looking for lots of nightlife, a variety of food/restaurants, shopping etc, definitely look elsewhere. Little Cottonwood Canyon is pretty much just about the skiing.
