21 days in California

My wife & are due to arrive into San Francisco on the 8th September, staying and using our hotel at San Bruno as a base for 5days, touring around San Francisco. We intend departing San Bruno on the 13th Sept. to commence touring Central California. We are travelling to Hollister, visiting and staying with a cousin for 2/3 days. After leaving Hollister, we intend to visit Yosemite NP for 5+ - days. Yosemite NP will have to be gentle walks, etc, due to short duration of walking ability. After leaving Yosemite NP. we then intend to drive and stay along Highway 1 - the Pacific Highway - to Carmel / Monterey/ Pebble Beach as a base until the 28th Sept. Depart Monterey 28th Sept. drive to San Francisco. 1 night stay in San Bruno before for departure to the UK . Please can any person advise if this plan is achievable without doing too much driving and ideas of where to stay, what to see / visit, etc. Kind Regards. Ken. Austhorpe.Leeds

In Yosemite Valley you can park your car and use the free shuttle bus system to get around. At Happy Isles it's a short flat walk to the first footbridge over the Merced River (the trail gets more arduous up to Vernal Falls so you'd want to ignore that). There's a walk of perhaps half a mile from the shuttle bus stop to Mirror Lake along a paved road with a gentle slope and no motor vehicles. The walk to the foot of Yosemite Falls is fairly short, and flat and paved.

At Glacier Point there's a walk from the parking area to the viewing point up a slight gradient, and it's paved.

At Mariposa Grove there's a tram ride available (for a small charge) to remove any need to walk, or if you wish you can take the tram ride up and then decide whether you want to walk back down (about half a mile, slight gradient, unpaved forest path) or use the tram.

You can check that yourself: in Google Maps put each of your stopping points into the route planner section then check the daily distances. Google Maps occasionally comes up with crazy results when it plots routes, so give it a sanity check. Also, its time estimates assume absolutely no stop or delays and even then tend to be over-optimistic, so treat them with a pinch of salt. It's a wonderful resource though.

Have you discovered the national park service web site http://www.nps.gov - a wealth of information about each park, and in the left margin there's a link to a detailed map which show the roads and hiking trails and where relevant the free shuttle bus routes.

Can't you do Yosemite first, to Holiister and hw1 then and return to SF? Looks a more logistical way to me instead to Hollister to Yosemite and backtrack to Pacific coast. Or Hollister, Pacific coast-Yosemite-SF.

San Bruno is terrible place to base yourself to explore San Francisco. Is there a reason you are staying there? Family? Friends? If not I would look into hotels in San Francisco.

And yes, you should, if you can drive SF to Yosemite, Yosemite to Hollister, Hollister to Monterey, Monterey to SFO,

Hi

Detailed ideas for Yosemite are on the Yosemite forum page. Read the Trip Reports and the lodging ideas. You MUST have lodging reservations. Yosemite: tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g61000-i315

>>At Mariposa Grove there's a tram ride available (for a small charge)<<

My wallet says that $25 per person is a big charge!

Yosemite Falls will be Yosemite 'Wall' in September.

----------

The San Francisco forum page has information about visiting this City, including lodging ideas. September is convention 'season' so lodging prices tend to be high.
