Advice on where to go from San Francisco

We are planning a trip to San Francisco for 5 days end of January, followed by 5 days in San Jose (to visit family). We would then like to spend a week someplace that is not too far from these cities where we can relax in a really nice hotel and be walking distance to some interesting places to visit. We will be travelling with a 16 month old and are worried about how cold it will be around that time of year. We would love to go to Yosemite but have heard it can snow there around that time of year. Can anyone recommend anywhere nice to visit? Half Moon Bay? Is it worth flying to Newport beach or Palm Springs or are there enough nice places to visit around SF?

Thanks

Hi,

Many families with babies/toddlers live in places that get snow.

It won't be too cold for your child but it might be too cold for you?

It is after all, winter and the mountains can certainly get snow and you'd have to have warm clothes to be comfortable in those areas.

I can't see spending a week in Half Moon Bay!

Our desert areas, like Palm Springs have large resort hotels where you can loll around but it is nice to have a car there to go visit the local attractions. Since it is winter it can also rain and be quite chilly at night after the sun goes down.

There's nowhere that will be hot/beach weather. IF that is something you'd like for a week I'd suggest that you fly down to Mexico. Perhaps Cabo San Lucas or Puerto Vallarta.

Cabo is on the edge of a desert and PV is on the edge of jungle so different atmospheres but nice large hotels and no need for a car.

You come all the way from Australia and have a week to spare in Ca. You don't want to miss Yosemite NP for sure but not for the whole week. Head over to the Yosemite National Park forum for more info. Newport Beach is nice but you have Glenelg at your doorstep in your neck of the woods. If you want to go away for that week I suggest Palm Springs over the coast. Joshua Tree NP is close to Palm Springs and worth a visit.

Have you looked into the Central Coast and Big Sur? Your toddler is young enough to just go for the ride. One week is long enough to do the drive from SF-Monterey/Carmel-Cambria-SF. I am assuming you will be heading home from SFO.

Depending exactly how many days and nights you have, you may even have time for both Yosemite and at least Monterey/Cambria and day trip to Big Sur.

Just depends on what you want to do and see and how much moving around.

While in San Jose, consider taking your toddler to Happy Hollow Park and or Gilroy Gardens. It's perfect for that age.
