Help for planning trip. Yosemite, Canyon, Vegas, LA

Hello,

- New to California.

- Traveling with family.

- During early October, starting from SF bay area we plan to visit:

1) Yosemite National Park

2) Tioga Pass & Death Valley

3) Grand Canyon

4) Las Vegas

5) Los Angeles

then back to SF bay area in 7-8 days.

- We are quite flexible. If you feel like, we can add some more OR should remove from the list, please let us know. Your suggestions will be highly appreciated.

- Any help regarding the roads, weather conditions and tips regarding accommodation in the parks (Yosemite & Canyon) would be a great help.

Thanks

You have too much driving for the time you have.

I'd cut out Los Angeles. There is no point in driving from Las Vegas to Los Angeles for a one-day visit, then driving back to San Francisco the next day. Los Angeles county is larger than some European countries. You also can't do the lovely California coastline in one day so the LA part of your wishlist needs another trip entirely.

A case could also be made for cutting out Grand Canyon, too, as it takes out two of your days.

I'd say,

2 nights Yosemite Valley

1 night Lee Vining

1 night Lone Pine

1 night Death Valley

2 nights Grand Canyon Village

1 night Santa Barbara

Go through Big Sur, 1 night Monterey

But that's 9 nights/10 days so to do that you would have to add 2 nights to do it. The drives to and from the Grand Canyon would be long so you would need to get an early start on those days. I recommended 2 nights on the eastern side of the Sierras because you will be there at the time when fall colors should be all over. See www.monocounty.org/docs/FallColorGuide.pdf and http://californiafallcolor.com for a guide to the colors.

sunrisesandiego-

You have also avoided allowing any time in Las Vegas. :)

And that's already too much time there.

@PareoB & @sunrisesandiego: Thanks for the inputs.

- I can't split, my family is visiting and have to complete in single trip. But I can add/remove places.

- I got the point I can't cover all. I should remove Canyon from the list.

- Updated Itinerary:

Day 1: Mountain View to Yosemite around 200 miles.

Day 2: Another day at Yosemite

Day 3: Yosemite via Tioga Pass to Lone Pine (night stay at Lone Pine OR Death Valley ??)

Day 4: Lone Pine via Death Valley to Vegas

Day 5: Vegas

Day 6: Vegas to LA (Universal Studios)

Day 7: LA (Santa Monica & Malibu)

Day 8: LA to Mountain View (Any place which I can stop for some hours in between ??)

Will appreciate your suggestions

Thanks

I would chose either Las Vegas or Los Angeles

You can bypass Las Vegas and head to Los Angles from Death Valley. Or you can skip Death Valley and drive from the western side of Yosemite to the Los Angeles area. You are subjecting everyone to a lot of driving to go to Universal Studios.

I don't have a good grasp on what your party does or doesn't want to do. You haven't really told us.

Day 8 Los Angeles to Mountain View gets you a boring boring drive, that completely ignores the lovely Big Sur coastline. You don't have time to do the coastal drive (Highway 1) in one day.

I'm going to bump this up to remind you to switch over to the California section and not keep posting general California questions on the Yosemite forum.

@PareoB: This is California forum ? right ?

If I have to make choice over LA or Vegas. I would choose LA, then I can spend a day at Big Sur too.

But not sure yet.

A trip entirely within California would be really nice:

Day 1: Mountain View to Yosemite

Day 2: Another day at Yosemite

Day 3: Yosemite via Tioga Pass to Lone Pine

Day 4: Lone Pine to Death Valley and back

Day 5: Lone Pine to LA

Day 6: Universal Studios

Day 7: LA to Big Sur

Day 8: Big Sur to Mountain View

- Talked to my family they want an evening in Vegas.

Thus the updated itinerary is:

Day 1 Mountain View To Yosemite

Day 2 Yosemite

Day 3 Yosemite via Tioga Pass to Lone Pine OR Death Valley

Day 4 Lone Pine/Death Valley to Las Vegas(guess 1 night is enough for Vegas)

Day 5 Vegas to LA

Day 6 Universal Studios

Day 7 LA to BigSur CoastLine

Day 8 BigSur to Mountain View

Please let me know if it still needs improvements.

Thanks
