Cali intinerary

We are coming over to the USA in October/November and I was wanting to run my itinerary past the forum. I have done a heap of research and keep changing our mind about our trip. Alas, we have locked in our trip so just wanted to get some thoughts.

Oct 22 - Aririve LA

10/23 - LA

10/24 - LA

10/25 - LA

10/26 - LA/ Fly to Vegas from Burbank

10/27 - LV

10/28 - LV

10/29 - LV

10/30 - Fly to SF/ Drive Yosemite

10/31 - Yosemite

11/1 - Monterey

11/ 2 - Monterey

11/3 - San Fran

11/4 - San Fran

11/5 - San Fran

11/6 - San Fran - Fly out to New York on last flight

There is alot fo pack in, but this may be our only chance to see the USA for a while so we want to see as much as we can!

Hi and welcome to the forum,

Your itinerary looks quite reasonable to me. Just a comment or two:

Personally, I would probably have spent one or two less nights in Vegas, but that's just me. I'm not a big gambler/casino/shows kind of guy. Still, with that time there, you may be able to rent a car for a day (you won't need to rent one if you're just haning out along the Strip), and head over to Hoover Dam or perhaps Death Valley for a day trip.

I'm also not sure what you mean by "locked in," so if you have non-refundable reservations and can't change anything, then you're still okay.

But if you can make adjustments, one thing I would recommend is to head from Yosemite to Cambria on the coast. Doing that will allow you to drive the coast highway through Big Sur, perhaps some of the best scenery along the entire route. You could swap one of your two nights in Monterey for a night in Cambria.

Finally, I hope you plan on turning in your car as soon as you hit San Francisco once you get there. It will be an expensive nuisance if you don't. Otherwise, it's very easy to get around downtown SF using public transportation.

(Although before turning the car in, I may first make a trip across the Golden Gate Bridge to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area on the Marin headlands to get a spectacular view of the city and the bridge together. It's best done in the afternoon when the sun is on the west side of the bridge.)

Even if you don't make any of those minor adjustments, you're still going to have an enjoyable trip.

Great advise above and agree with it all. Note the abbreviations used SF for San Francisco and CA is just the simple two letter abbreviation for California

One option instead of flying to SF would be to rent a car in LV, drive to Lone Pine for a night and then drive to Yosemite. Yes it will be longer and you an cut a day from LV but it wil take you around 7 hours to get from LV to Yosemite between time spent getting to the airport, flying and then renting car and driving to Yosemite.

Here is an article about the drive belo is suggesting in Reply 2

Las Vegas to Yosemite tripadvisor.com/Travel-g28926-c182361

Keep an eye on the road conditions as Tioga Pass usually closes in early November.

Thanks for your help guys, really appreciate it! We are definitely going to drop the car off at SF as we figure there is no real reason to hold onto it as its easier to get around in SF. We did want to have the extra time in Vegas, its something we have always wanted to do so we are going to spend three days there. That will give us enough time to see it all.

We would really love to do the drive at cambria, just a bit worried it will take to long to get there from yosemite. Can you advise on how long you think that would take if we left at say 8 or 9 in the morning. We originally thought about going to monterey, get there mid arvo and go to see the aquairum. Then the next day we would go down to point lobos and big sur, check the coast line out and have a late lunch at Nepenthe.

also I mean "locked" as in we have decided on thats where we want to go and the dates we want to be there. Some areas are flexible, such as going cambria - monterey - sf instead of monterey - monterey - sf

Someone here will have to tell you how long from Yosemite to Cambria, but it seems to me that if you are taking time out from Monterey to go south to Big Sur and return, you might as well go to Cambria first and make the whole drive north.

That is a popular and often taken route.

Count on 5-5.5 hours to get from Yosemte Valley to Cambria and you'll be driving through Paso Robles with its wineries. Yosemite to Monterey directly app will take 4 hours.
