Greetings from London !
We are a family of 4 including 2 boys 10 and 12 and we are planning our first trip to Southern California in late June next year. We will have 12 full days not counting travel time and are flying in and out of Los Angeles International.
We try and make our holidays a mixture of activities that will please everyone in our family. Some beach time, some museum time (we would like to see the Getty and the Science Museum with the Space Shuttle) We may do the Warner brothers tour and a quick drive through Hollywood. We want to check out Santa Monica and perhaps spend a couple of hours shopping but we are not interested in Outlet Malls.
Our boys would like to do 2 or 3 days in Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure.
I would also like to visit San Diego and La Jolla and Coronado and the whole Naval aspect appeals to us so we do want to cover the USS Midway.and any other Naval areas open to visitors. We have a long Naval history in our family. In addition to that, we have read about Balboa Park and the museums there. We would also like to visit the Safari Park which is I hear is north of San Diego.
Given all these attractions, I would appreciate some help from you Californians , Where should we make our base ? I have glanced through some of the forum posts and I see some Californians say that Anaheim is central but I see posters in the LA forum say it will take a long time to drive from Anaheim to LAX or other cities. San Diego seems to be more than an hour and a half South of Anaheim.
We typically stay in 4 star hotels. Should we make Anaheim our base and drive 3 days to LA and then 4 days to San Diego or should we stay in LA and San Diego and drive the 2 or 3 days to Anaheim. We are renting a car and we don't mind driving but we don't want to spend a lot of time in the car.
Could you please help me figure out where we should base ourselves ?
Kind Regards J.
